JANUS’ New Stolen Sisters Single to Launch January 17th
JANUS, as part of their Music Sparks Change Campaign, is proud to partner with Sovereign Bodies Institute for the release of their new single Stolen Sisters. The Sovereign Bodies Institute (SBI) builds on Indigenous traditions of data gathering and knowledge transfer to create, disseminate, and put into action research on gender and sexual violence against Indigenous people. The new JANUS music single, Stolen Sisters aims to build awareness of this issue through an artistic medium.
The video for JANUS’ new single reflects statistics regarding the plight of missing and murdered indigenous women:
- Approximately 4,000 cases of missing and murdered indigenous women and girls (MMIWG) have been documented in the United States and Canada.
- Of those 4,000 MMIWG cases, 35% are girls 21 years of age and under.
- Of those 4,000 MMIWG cases, 27% are girls 18 years of age and under.
- Of those 4,000 MMIWG cases, over 50% were murders.
- Murder is the third leading cause of death among indigenous women.
JANUS frontman David Scotney’s commanding vocals implore us to, “Hear their voice - they will never be silent,” while powerful imagery of missing and murdered indigenous women and their families flashes on the screen. “See the face of our stolen sisters,” continues Scotney while the imagery and statistics continue. The listener at once feels the dire urgency of the missing and murdered indigenous women and girls crisis, and one feels compelled to help fight the battle.
